Britse overheid en venture capital: 13 jaar gepruts

RAPPORT VEEGT VLOER AAN MET OVERHEIDSFINANCIERING TECHSTARTERS

The government's record as a venture capital investor will come under fire on Wednesday as research says it has produced disappointing results in creating jobs and boosting profits at the start-up companies it finances.

The report - from the British Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and state-backed technology fund Nesta - raises questions about how UK taxpayer money is being spent to search for start-ups to match the likes of Google and Ebay in the US.

The timing of the research, just as the government is choosing a manager to run its VC fund of funds with 150m of Treasury money, could be designed to influence how state funds are allocated in future. Analysing 782 companies that received funding from six types of government-backed venture capital schemes from 1995 to 2008, the report found the money had made only 'a modest impact' on profit-ability and jobs.
